Who is Imam Husain? A Champion.

Islam’s defender, Imam Husain , The Master of Martyrs, The Son of Commander of the Faithful (ﻉ), and the Queen of Purification (ص).

On the third of blessed month of Sha’ban, in the fourth year after Hijrah, news of Imam Hussein’s (ع) birth reached the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). This was a year after the birth of Imam Hassan (ع). Quickly, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) went to the home of Imam Ali and Fatimah al-Zahra’ (ع).

O Asma’,” he called to Asma’, the daughter of Umays, “bring me my son.”

Asma’ brought the newborn wrapped in a cloth. The face of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) beamed with joy upon seeing his grandson. He held the baby close, reciting the call to prayer (adan) in his right ear and the shorter version (iqamah) in his left. Then, he cradled the baby and shed tears.

“Why are you crying?” asked Asma’.

“Because of my son,” he replied.

“But he’s just a newborn,” she said.

“O Asma’,” he explained, “after me, transgressing party will kill him. May Allah (ﷻ) not let them receive my intercession.”

Then he whispered to Asma’, “Don’t tell Fatimah, she’s just given birth.”

Turning to Imam Ali (ع), the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked, “What name have you chosen for him?”

“I would never name him before you, O Messenger of Allah,” replied Imam Ali (ع).

At that moment, a revelation came to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), instructing the name of the infant. With this divine guidance, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to Imam Ali (ع), “Name him Hussein.”

Imam Hussain in Quran

Allah only intends to keep ˹the causes of˺ evil away from you and purify you completely, O members of the ˹Prophet’s˺ family!

Surah Al-Ahzab 33

Traditionists tell us that this verse came about when the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) asked for a shawl. He used it to cover Imam Ali, Fatimah, Imam Hassan, and Imam Husain (may Allah be pleased with them). He prayed, “O my Lord, these are my family. Cleanse them and purify them completely.” So, Allah (ﷻ), the Almighty, revealed this noble verse in acknowledgment of the purity and greatness of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) household (the Ahlul Bayt).

Imam Husain (ع) (also known as Abu-Abdullah) holds an extraordinary position, matched only by his father, mother, brother, and his descendants who were also Imams. Peace and blessings be upon them all. If someone were to carefully study and gather all the stories and traditions about Imam Husain, they would surely find that he stands out as the greatest example among Muslims. The family of Imam ali is also called Panjetan or the “Five.”

  • Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is respectfully addressed with the title “Rasulullah” or “Nabiullah” (Messenger of Allah or Prophet of Allah).
  • Imam Ali (ع) is famously called “Amir al-Mu’minin” (the Commander of the Faithful).
  • Bibi Fatimah (ع) is called “Malika-e-Tatheer” “Queen of the Purified Ones,”
  • Imam Hassan (ع) is known as “al-Mujtaba” (the Chosen One).
  • Imam Husain(ع) is title “Sayyid al-Shuhada” (the Master of Martyrs)

The Battle of Karbala

Imam Husain (ع) stood up for what he believed in, even when it was tough. He left his home with his family and a few friends because he wanted to take the ultimate stand for social justice and to save Islam.

Imam Husain (ع) and his family and his followers began their journey on the eighth day of Dhul-Hijjah, the sacred month when pilgrims prepare for Hajj, in the year 60 A.H.

When Yazid (العن) heard about what Husain (ع) was doing, he sent a massive army of 30,000 soldiers to force Imam Husain (ع) to obey his rule.

Meanwhile, the Umayyad leaders, led by Ubaidullah bin Ziyad (العن) in Kufa, began sending more soldiers and gathering more troops for Karbala’. They were aware of Imam Husain’s (ع) significance and were afraid, even though he was only defended by a few men and the people of Kufa had let him down.

In the desert of Karbala’, Imam Husain (ع) became a symbol of freedom and a slogan for the revolutionaries, inspiring many across different times and places. The night of Ashura ended, feeling like a long time had passed. It was now the tenth of Muharram, the day of Ashura, the day of jihad and martyrdom, the day of the decisive battle, and the final battle.

Never did Imam husain (ع) think of reconsidering his decision. There was no one but Allah (ﷻ) to look to. He raised his hands in Dua:

“O Allah! It is You in Whom I trust amid all grief. You are my hope
amid all violence. You are my refuge and provision in everything that
happens to me. How many grievances weaken the heart, leaving
me with no means to handle them, during which friend deserts me,
and the enemy rejoices. I lay it before you and complain of it to
You, because of my desire for You. You relieve me of it and
remove it from me. You are the Master of all grace, the Possessor of all
goodness, and the Ultimate Resort of all desire.”

Once again, Imam Husain (ع) delivered a speech. He reminded the Kufan’s of their Khat (letters), combined with their pledge of allegiance. His call fell on deaf ears.

“You will not understand my words because your bellies are filled with the unlawful.”

He mounted his horse and galloped to a place before the Yazid’s army, in his hand, he grasped the Qur’an. He opened it, raising it above his head, and said: “O people! Let us have the Book of Allah (ﷻ) and the Sunnah of my grandfather, the Prophet of Allah (ﷻ), to arbitrate between us.”

Imam Husain’s (ع) words didn’t sway anyone. Instead, Umar bin Sa’d commanded his army’s flag bearer to move forward and signaled the beginning of the battle. He personally shot the first arrow towards Imam Husain’s (ع) camp, declaring, “I am the first to attack, and you all are witnesses.”

It was the time of Zuhar, and all his friends and family were gone: his three-month son Ali Asghar (ع), His brother Moula Abbas (ع), and his son Ali-Akbar (ع), who was known as Shabih-e-Rasulallah and all his friends and companions were martyred Hungry and Thirsty of three days.

He fought against the Army of Yazid (العن) bravely to save Islam.

A three-pointed arrow hit Imam Husain (ع) in the chest.

Deeply embedded, he could not dislodge it. The blood gushed out of his holy chest unhalted. He fell down to the ground, swimming in a pool of his blood.

The Umayyads’ Hatred towards the Ahlul-Bayt (ع) remained unquenchable. Shimr bin Dhil-Jawshan (العن), a criminal from their army, approached Imam Husain (ع), sat on his chest, and severed his head from the back of his neck. Ibn Sa’d (العن) then commanded his horse riders to trample over Imam Husain’s (ع) lifeless body.

With the fall of Imam Husain (ع), the tragedy unfolded. His head, along with those of his companions, including the young Abdullah, were barbarically severed and presented as gifts to the Umayyad governor of Kufa.

Imam Husain’s bravery was like a light in the dark in the quiet of that battlefield. His sacrifice showed how powerful love and faith can be.
